Does Granite Countertops Emit Radiation?

Quartz Countertops

I recently read about an interesting article in the NY Times, about the unusually high radiation found in one home. Dr. Lynn Sugarman, a NJ resident bought her summer home in Lake George NY, where a routine inspection revealed a high presence of radon, a radioactive substance that can cause lung cancer.

The high levels traced back to the kitchen countertops. While most observers believe that the rate of emitting radiation of granite countertops to be minuscule, a number of customers may not want to chance even a small probability. The NY Times article goes on to give other examples and said that The E.P.A. recommends taking action if radon gas levels in the home exceeds 4 picocuries per liter of air (a measure of radioactive emission); about the same risk for cancer as smoking a half a pack of cigarettes per day.

This argument of high radiation has often been made by rival quartz countertop manufacturers, but now there is a growing chorus. With increasing regularity in recent months, the Environmental Protection Agency has been receiving calls from radon inspectors as well as from concerned homeowners about granite countertops with radiation measurements several times above background levels.

What are the other countertop materials available?

Quartz Countertops is a viable alternative. For example, CaesarStone (Comprised of 93% natural quartz) Quartz Surfaces and Countertops offer the ultimate combination of form and function, allowing for a more diverse, durable, and practical countertop surfacing material than either granite or marble. Kitchen remodeling happens to be one of the most common remodeling projects because it brings new life into a home also adds extra value. With this win/win situation consumers dedicate a great deal of time and money to make their rooms elegant, functional and long lasting.

Most consumers look for durability over plain and fragile, the new "want" trend in kitchen remodeling is quartz countertops. The latest and greatest quartz countertop material will enhance the style of your kitchen and make cooking more convenient. Quartz countertops are naturally hard, stain resistant, burn proof, long lasting, and elegant. These are many reasons why quartz counter tops would be an attractive feature in a kitchen.

Quartz countertop material comes in a variety of colors making it easier to put together an elegant decor with personalization. Three top picks for kitchen themes are: Industrial and Modern, Shabby Chic, and contemporary.

Industrial and modern kitchens often entail clean lines, sleek appliances and a darker color palette. Often, the focal points in these kitchens are the appliances and the lighting.

Shabby chic is probably the antithesis of industrial and modern kitchens. These kitchens tend to feel like kitchens from country cottages. Many homeowners have whitewashed cabinets or light colored stained cabinets.

Third is the contemporary kitchen which is in between modern and shabby chic. In this kitchen, warm colors are used to liven up. Cabinetry is often a light colored pine or warm cherry color which makes the kitchen feel vibrant. Quartz counter tops are also popular because of the amount of color options. It also makes the kitchen design look classic.

Mix and match these themes and just remember that you can’t go wrong with a contemporary theme which is a mixture of the popular three. Have fun designing and soon enough your dream kitchen will unveil into reality!
